My Account is a secure online service offered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) that allows you to conveniently access your income tax and benefit information as well as manage your tax affairs in one place.
Here are some key features:
- It allows you to see your documents (e.g., T4 slips, RRSP deposits, etc.) as they become available instead of having to wait for them to arrive by mail. This feature can be especially helpful if you’ve misplaced one of your information slips.
- If you are using NETFILE-certified software, you can use the auto-fill feature to automatically fill in parts of an income tax and benefit return with information that the CRA has available at the time of the request.
- If someone else (like an ATAP professional) is completing your return, You can assign them as a representative so they can access the information available from CRA
You can find a full list of features and instructions for accessing your account on the CRA Website.
For business owners, there is also a CRA My Business Account
Recent Changes
Beginning February 2022, registered users will be required to provide an email address to use the CRA's sometimes-loved, sometimes-loathed My Account service.
If you do not already have one on file, you will be prompted to provide an email address when you log in to your account. If you do not provide an email address, you will no longer be able to use the My Account service.
The CRA is requiring all users to provide an email address as part of its increased security protocols (which include multi-factor authentication) in response to the widespread problems they experienced last year.
It is our understanding that once the CRA has an email address, it will by default no longer send paper correspondence (including your Notice of Assessment) to you - you will instead receive an email notice that mail is available to download.
However, if you prefer to receive paper correspondence, you can update your settings through the My Account service after you have provided your email address.
At this time, there are no changes to CRA's My Business Account service, but we expect it will see a similar email requirement in the near future.
